Australia's captain Expected to Feature a Major Role in Ashes Series
The pace bowler has secured over 300 dismissals in 71 five-day games with an average of 22.10.
The Australian selection chief Bailey has stated that captain Pat Cummins will be a central figure in this winter's historic rivalry.
Rumors had circulated that the veteran bowler might sit out due to a ongoing back issue that had not yet healed.
Earlier indications from the squad suggested no definitive call had been made regarding his involvement, with the Test matches scheduled to begin on 21 November in Western Australia.
The selector shared that the captain is progressing and felt positive about his chances of participating.
"We know that time is getting short and multiple considerations involved, not just the back issue, but further aspects," he commented.
"It's positive. We firmly believe that he's going to play a significant role. With luck starting in Perth. If not, we'll reassess."
Injury History
The captain missed Australia's limited-overs series against New Zealand and India recently after examinations confirmed a lower back issue.
Previous incidents include of recurring issues, with recurrences in multiple past seasons leading to absences from three Australian summers in a short span.
He emphasized he would be bold in recovery efforts in his comeback strategy to ensure his availability for the contest.
He mentioned that it was unclear if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his comeback but admitted it was "getting tight" for him to be fit for the opener.
Alternative Arrangements
In case of absence, ex-skipper Smith will take over the captaincy.
Versatile player Green was withdrawn recently from the ODI lineup for their ODI contests against the Asian giants as a precautionary measure because of soreness in his side.
Bailey described it as a "small issue and mentioned that he'll feature in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "in a good place to resume bowling."
"Considerable effort has gone into building out the plan for him to participate for the opening match as an all-rounder," Bailey explained.
"His involvement was limited to the first two ODIs anyway. The way he swings the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, if it causes any delay for another day, the choice was made to take a cautious route."
